This Privacy Policy explains what information Hashbang and the hashbang.app website collect, how it is used, and your rights regarding that information. This policy applies when you use Hashbang or visit hashbang.app.

1. Overview

Hashbang is a privacy-focused app that does not use general behavioral telemetry and does not have any advertising. Direct-download builds send limited update-check data, as described below. Here is the short version of what Hashbang does and does not do with your data.

What Hashbang does:

  • The app stores your documents, settings, and other application data locally on your device.
  • Versions of the app downloaded directly from our website contact hashbang.app to check for updates when the app launches and when you manually choose Check for Updates. The Apple App Store version uses Apple’s update system and does not check for updates this way.
  • The app loads remote resources when an HTML document you preview refers to them, such as images, custom fonts, and JavaScript frameworks. Those requests go to the third parties referenced by the document, not to Hashbang.

What Hashbang does not do:

  • No user accounts or authentication are required.
  • No advertising or ad tracking.
  • No crash-reporting service, session replay, or behavioral analytics SDK.
  • No collection of the contents of your documents or folders.
  • No selling or renting of your personal information.

Hashbang is a filesystem-native Markdown editor. It reads and writes the files and folders you choose on your device. Your documents remain under your control and are not uploaded to us.

2. Information We Collect

2.1 Information You Provide Directly

Documents and folders. Hashbang accesses documents and folders only when you choose or create them. Hashbang does not upload their contents to us. However, HTML Preview may load remote resources and run document-provided JavaScript that can access and transmit files within the previewed document’s directory subtree. See Sections 4 and 8.

Settings and application state. Hashbang stores settings and limited application state locally so the app can remember your preferences and restore your workspace.

Communications. If you contact us, we receive the information you choose to include, such as your name, email address, and message. Please do not include sensitive or confidential information in your requests.

2.2 Information Collected Automatically

Update checks. Direct-download builds may check the website for updates once when the app launches and when you manually choose Check for Updates. The request contains the information normally needed to fetch a static file, such as your IP address, requested URL, and request timestamp. Cloudflare receives this information when processing the request and may retain it in accordance with its own policies. Hashbang does not add an update identifier or operate update analytics.

Customers who install Hashbang through Apple’s App Store receive a separate build that uses Apple’s update system and does not include Hashbang’s direct-download update checker. Other store-managed or package-manager builds may likewise use their distributor’s update process.

Website requests. When you visit hashbang.app, our hosting provider receives information ordinarily sent with a web request, such as your IP address, browser and device information, requested page, and timestamp. The site may also request fonts or other static assets from the third-party providers identified in Section 4.

Hashbang does not automatically send us document contents, file names, folder names, Git repository contents, editing activity, feature usage, crash reports, or terminal activity.

2.3 Information We Do Not Collect

We do not collect through Hashbang:

  • The contents of your documents or folders.
  • Your Git history, commits, branches, or remote repository credentials.
  • Commands or output from a terminal used alongside the app.
  • Your browsing history outside pages or resources you explicitly open.
  • Financial or payment information.
  • Precise location or demographic information.

3. How We Use Your Information

We use information only for the following purposes:

  • Local application data: To open, edit, save, search, preview, and restore the files and workspace you choose.
  • Update requests: To provide compatible updates and operate and protect the static update service.
  • Website request data: To deliver and secure hashbang.app, diagnose operational problems, and understand aggregate traffic.
  • Communications: To respond to your questions, requests, or feedback.

We do not use your information for advertising or cross-service behavioral profiling.

4. Data Storage and Third-Party Services

Your documents, folder contents, settings, and application state are stored locally on your device. You control their retention through your files, Hashbang’s settings, and your operating system.

We use Cloudflare to host hashbang.app and serve update information and downloads. Cloudflare processes web requests and related operational data on our behalf. Cloudflare’s privacy policy is available at https://www.cloudflare.com/privacypolicy/.

The website loads fonts or other static assets from Google Fonts and jsDelivr. Requests to those providers are governed by the Google Privacy Policy and the jsDelivr Privacy Policy, respectively.

The HTML Preview feature can load remote images, stylesheets, fonts, scripts, and other resources referenced by the document you open. It can also run document-provided JavaScript by default. These requests are made directly to the domains named in the document, which may receive your IP address and ordinary request metadata under their own privacy policies.

A previewed HTML document can access files within its own directory and subdirectories. When JavaScript is enabled, document-provided code may transmit that content to third parties. You can turn JavaScript off for the current session, but static remote resources may still load. Do not preview untrusted HTML, and avoid storing sensitive files alongside HTML you do not trust.

If you open an external link, the app passes it to your default browser or another appropriate application. The destination’s privacy policy then applies.

5. Data Retention

  • Documents and folders: Retained wherever you save them until you move or delete them.
  • Settings and application state: Retained locally until you clear the app’s data or uninstall it, subject to your operating system’s behavior.
  • Website and infrastructure logs: Retained according to our operational needs and Cloudflare’s applicable retention practices.
  • Communications: Retained as long as reasonably necessary to respond, maintain business records, and meet legal obligations.

6. Data Sharing

We do not sell, rent, or trade personal information. We share information only in these limited circumstances:

  • Infrastructure provider: Cloudflare processes data needed to host and secure the website and operate the update service.
  • Website asset providers: Google Fonts and jsDelivr receive ordinary request information when your browser requests assets from them.
  • Document-provided services: When you preview a document containing remote resources or scripts, your device may communicate with the third parties referenced by that document.
  • Legal compliance and safety: We may disclose information if required by law or when reasonably necessary to protect rights, safety, and the integrity of our services.
  • Business transfer: Information may be transferred as part of a merger, acquisition, financing, reorganization, or sale of assets, subject to this policy and applicable law.

7. Your Rights and Choices

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, delete, restrict, or object to our processing of your personal information, and to receive a portable copy of it.

Most Hashbang data is stored only on your device, so you can manage it directly by editing or deleting your files, changing settings, clearing application data, or uninstalling the app. Avoid using Check for Updates if you do not want a manual request sent to the update service.

To exercise a right concerning information held by us, contact us using the details in Section 9. We may need to verify your request and may retain information where required by law.

California residents. We do not sell or share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising. California law may give you rights to know about, correct, or delete personal information we hold and to receive equal service when exercising those rights.

European Economic Area, United Kingdom, and Switzerland. Depending on the context, we process information to provide the service you requested, based on our legitimate interests in operating and securing Hashbang and hashbang.app, with your consent, or to meet legal obligations. You may have the right to complain to your local data-protection authority.

8. Security

We use reasonable administrative and technical measures to protect information we hold. Hashbang keeps document processing local by default and limits filesystem access to locations you choose. However, no method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

HTML Preview is intended for content you trust. A previewed HTML document may load remote resources and, while JavaScript is enabled, run document-provided code within its preview sandbox. Review unfamiliar HTML before previewing it and turn JavaScript off when appropriate.
